Chess and Board Games Club
Every activity period students can relax and play a variety of board games. This is a great opportunity for the students to chat and learn how to play different games. Primarily, this was a chess club, but this year it was decided to expand it and purchase some new board games for the students to play. The students really enjoyed the variety of games on offer.
The club provides students with the opportunity to develop planning and problem solving skills as well as to develop interpersonal skills. It also helps to develop their English language and spelling skills. Students are able to socialize with one another. This is an opportunity for students to teach each other different strategies and techniques, and to develop new friendships between different grade levels. It is the intention to expand the club so that students will be given the opportunity to enjoy competition against other schools.
The gardening club was initiated inline with current government and MOE initiatives relating to sustainability. It was hoped that the club would highlight the amount of wasted produced by the school and how this could be effectively recycled and used to help a school garden. Another aim of the club was to teach students about self sufficiency by showing how to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
The club progressed during the semester and began by learning about compostable school waste that could be used to make natural fertilizer. Students then designed and built their own compost bins and began to collect school waste. After this they built their own self watering seeders to grow fruit and vegetables from seeds. An automated watering system was built for use during holidays to prevent the plants from drying out. Throughout the semester students took care of the plants and eagerly awaited the production of their own home grown fruit and vegetables.
The aim of the cooking club was to cultivate the students’ ability to confidently prepare food independently and expertly of adult supervision. Each week teachers identified a specific recipe which was delicious and able to have been cooked from start to finish within the activity time-frame, and shared the details with students in advance. Students then split into groups to prepare their ingredients and cook each recipe. Teachers then tasted and allocate points to each group according to the flavor and substance of each dish. Strong emphasis was placed on these four steps: preparation, cooking, safety, and cleaning. Kitchen safety and cleanliness was an important element of the lessons in order to instill a sense of responsibility.
