World Scholar’s Cup 2023

Since 2012 Panyarat High School has been a part of the World Scholar’s cup program, an international academic decathlon where students don’t just compete with each other, but with students from all around the world. Each year the students are given a theme (e.g. An entangled World) and a curriculum made up of 6 subjects relative to the theme. In a team of three, scholars (students that are competing, divided into juniors, seniors and skittles) do research and study those subjects and work on their teamwork. During each round, scholars are required to debate 3 rounds against scholars from other institutions and countries, do multiple choice tests that can have more than one answer, work together as a team to solve analytic questions and multimedia challenges in the bowl, and debate through the power of the pen in collaborative writing.

Over the week of September 1 through September 6th, PHS students Prim (402), Latte (403), Shasha (401), Gyomee (201), Mardi (203), and Mook (203) competed in the prestigious World Scholars Cup Global Round in Bangkok.  World Scholars Cup is an international academic competition where international school students from over 40 different countries compete in teams of 3 across a multiple of events and subject areas.  The PHS students qualified for the event through the Bangkok regional round, earning their qualification spots over students from the top international schools in Thailand.

As one of the few non-international schools competing in the event, PHS students received a total of 24 medals.  Leading the way for the upper school team, Latte (403) earned silver medals in team writing, team debate and in the science & technology section of the Scholars Challenge.  On top of her silver medals, Latte also earned a Gold Medal in debate, finishing in the top 100 out of thousands of students.  From 401, Shasha received silver medals in team debate, team writing and individual writing, as well as a Gold Medal in the debate competition.  Also contributing for our upper school team, Prim (402) received silver medals in team writing and team debate.

The PHS lower school students were forced into the senior division and performed admirably.  Taking charge was Mardi (203) who received silver medals in the team quiz bowl, team debate, history, and individual debate, as well as Gold Medals in individual writing, science & technology and art & music. For her outstanding performance, Mardi (403) finished in the top 50 in both the science & technology and art & music categories.  Also from 203, Mook received silver medals in team debate, team quiz bowl, science & technology, and individual debate.  Providing all around support, Gyomee (201) received silver medals in team quiz bowl and team debate

As a result of their outstanding achievements in the Bangkok Global round, all 6 students qualified to the Tournament of Champions competition held at Yale University in November. At this event, they will compete against international school students from across the world.
